Square fees (2026): what you really pay on card processing.
The short answer
Square charges one blended flat rate: about 2.6% + 15¢ in person and 3.3% + 30¢ online on the free plan, as read June 2026. There are no PCI, statement, or monthly-minimum fees — but flat-rate means a debit-heavy business keeps none of the savings on low-cost debit cards.
Read directly from Square’s published fee pages. US, as read June 24, 2026. Pricing model: Flat-rate (paid plans buy down the rate). These are list rates — verify against your own statement.
These are published rates, recorded and dated — not "what others actually pay" (that comes only from verified invoices, of which we hold none yet). The number that tells you whether you're overpaying is your processor markup above interchange.

Read this first: Square repriced in October 2025: the in-person fixed fee rose from 10¢ to 15¢ and the free-plan online rate to 3.3% + 30¢. Figures predating that change (e.g. "2.6% + 10¢" in person) are stale.
Common questions
Square fees — questions
Is Square expensive?
For low-volume or credit-heavy in-person businesses, Square’s flat 2.6% + 15¢ is competitive and carries no monthly or add-on fees. For debit-heavy or higher-volume merchants it is often expensive, because flat-rate keeps none of the low debit-card interchange savings that an interchange-plus processor would pass through. Compute your effective rate to compare.
Does Square charge monthly or PCI fees?
No. Square’s free plan has no monthly fee, no PCI compliance fee, no statement fee, no monthly minimum, and no contract. Lower processing rates (2.4–2.5% in person) are available on the $49/mo Plus and $149/mo Premium plans, as read June 2026.
Are Square’s fees negotiable?
Square’s published rates are fixed and generally not negotiable — it is a flat-rate processor. The lever is choosing the right plan (Free vs the $49/$149 paid plans) for your volume, not negotiating the rate itself. Very high-volume sellers can sometimes request custom pricing.
