Helcim fee record · PW-MF/HELCIM

Helcim fees (2026): what you really pay on card processing.

The short answer

Helcim uses interchange-plus: you pay true interchange plus a disclosed margin of about 0.40% + 8¢ in person (0.50% + 25¢ online) at the base tier, as read June 2026. Helcim’s own figures put the average effective rate near or below 2% in person, with no monthly fee.

Read directly from Helcim’s published pricing pages. US, as read June 24, 2026. Pricing model: Interchange-plus with automatic volume discounts (no monthly fee). These are list rates — verify against your own statement.

These are published rates, recorded and dated — not "what others actually pay" (that comes only from verified invoices, of which we hold none yet). The number that tells you whether you're overpaying is your processor markup above interchange.

The forensic read

What the headline rate hides

Helcim · the mechanism

Because interchange-plus passes through true interchange plus a disclosed margin, the statement shows the cost in two parts — the wholesale interchange and the processor’s stated margin. For a debit-heavy business, the low cost of regulated debit cards is passed through rather than absorbed into one blended rate. The all-in rate therefore moves with your card mix, which is inherent to how interchange-plus works.

The benchmark · a fair markup

For contrast, a fair small-business processor markup is roughly 0.25%–0.50% (25–50 bps) plus about 5–10¢ per transaction above interchange, fully disclosed on the statement. It is a range with a disclosure rule, not a universal threshold — markup fairly varies by industry risk, volume, and card-present vs. online mix. What is not transparent is a rate that hides the interchange/markup split.

Your statement’s effective rate (total fees ÷ total card volume) — and the processor markup hidden inside it — is what tells you whether you’re overpaying. Common questions

Helcim fees — questions

Is Helcim cheaper than Square or Stripe?

Because interchange-plus passes through the low cost of debit and regulated cards instead of charging one flat percent on everything, it typically produces a lower effective rate for established or debit-heavy businesses. At very low volume the difference narrows. This is a structural comparison, not a recommendation — compare on your own card mix and volume.

Are Helcim’s fees negotiable?

Helcim’s margin is published and tier-based, with automatic volume discounts rather than case-by-case negotiation: the rate falls as your monthly volume rises through the published tiers, and there is no contract to negotiate out of. The interchange portion is a pass-through cost no processor can lower.
